How to Choose the Core Material for Cleanroom Panels?

How to Choose the Core Material for Cleanroom Panels?

16 Sep 2026

The core material is crucial for the panels used in cleanroom partitions and ceilings. There are three main types on the market: rock wool, magnesium oxide, and aluminum honeycomb. They are not inherently better or worse, but rather suited to different applications.

Rock Wool Core Material

Rock Wool Core Material

A-grade fireproof, good thermal insulation, and relatively low cost, it is one of the most common core materials for cleanroom wall panels. Its disadvantages include average flatness and impact resistance, and its performance deteriorates after exposure to moisture. It is mostly used for walls with high fire resistance requirements and where perfect flatness is not a primary concern.

Magnesium Oxide Core Material (Magnesium Oxide Board)

Magnesium Oxide Core Material (Magnesium Oxide Board)

Also achieves A-grade fire resistance, high strength, moisture resistance, and can provide some structural support. It is moderately priced and has the widest range of applications. In cleanrooms, magnesium oxide boards are commonly used for ceilings and partitions, especially suitable for ceilings that need to support lighting fixtures, air vents, and HEPA filters.

Aluminum Honeycomb Core Material

Extremely lightweight, with extremely high flatness and rigidity, it boasts the highest aesthetic appeal and precision among the three types. However, it is also the most expensive. It is often used for ceilings and walls with extremely high requirements for flatness and cleanliness, such as high-level rooms in electronics and pharmaceutical clean areas.

How to choose the right one

For walls requiring heavy fire resistance and cost control: rock wool is preferred.

For ceilings needing to bear loads and support equipment: magnesium oxide is preferred.

For high cleanliness levels and a focus on flatness: aluminum honeycomb is preferred.

It's not necessary to use the most expensive materials throughout the entire house; matching materials according to the intended use of each area is the most cost-effective approach.
